Hiking, themes, information and fantastic views to Großfragant

The Rollbahn, “a wonderful hiking trail, for the most part through spruce and larch woodland, as well as a short section through dwarf shrubs …” sounds a bit wild, yet interesting too. The ‘Rollbahn’ as it is known, is the core element of a new themed trail which is being developed for summer 2019 in Großfragant and which will provide guests and walkers alike with information about the history of copper mining, along with Alpine pasture management and forestry in Großfragant. Sounds exciting doesn’t it?

Along the way on the Rollbahn you glean information about the glorious era of mining. The history of copper mining is reflected upon at several stations and there are quite a few old caves and remnants of walls from the former building to gaze in wonder at. Along with traditional image and text boards, artistic installations and stations where you get to “listen and experience” stimulate your imagination, taking you back to the era of mining. These days it is much more easy-going than it used to be and you will probably enjoy the route via the Rollbahn so much more than any of the mining guys who worked here many years ago.

Art on the mountain

During the mining era, the copper that was mined was transported into the valley along the rolling rails (Rollbahn) on special tracks. Parts of these tracks are still there today and some of the ancient wooden sleepers can still be seen. These sleepers have been transformed into art objects at the wayside and reveal the old railway line, along which material was transported into the valley. There are also various ‘time witnesses of the mining era’ that you can see in caves that have been preserved and, through art, you get to see just how arduous the mining era was.
